Hausbau II

A timbered house frame rises against a Swiss hillside, Hausbau II by Cuno Amiet catches the building mid act, beams and scaffold poles crossing the canvas in dark strokes. Amiet, the Swiss colorist, paints construction not as labor but as geometry, posts and rafters tilted at angles that make the whole structure feel weightless. The palette runs through sap green, brick red, and sky blue laid on thick, each brushstroke separate and visible, the ground left to flicker between the colors. A house grows out of paint rather than out of mortar. It suits a stairwell landing or a home office, anywhere a subject about building belongs.
