Három Táncosnő 1925

Three dancers fill the picture plane, their bodies angled mid-step in Scheiber Hugó's Három Táncosnő from 1925. Limbs curve into arabesques that overlap and echo, motion caught at full tilt. Color does the choreography here. Warm russet and deep carmine set the figures against a cooler ground of grey and slate blue, while flat planes of tone and crisp contour line divide each costume into facets. The composition reads like a cubist score, every arm and skirt hem snapped into geometric rhythm. Hungarian modernism of this energy belongs in a living room or studio, above a sofa or beside a piano, where its whirling forms can carry a whole wall.
