Harlem Valley, Winter

Snow hoods the hills and the valley floor of Harlem Valley, Winter, an Ernest Lawson winter landscape built in thick, buttery impasto. Cold light sits on every ridge. Lawson lays his pigment on like mortar, cream and slate dragged across the surface until the frozen river below reads as a single vein of ice blue. Bare trees thread the slopes in charcoal strokes. Rooftops hold their white loads without moving. His American Impressionist palette runs cooler here than in his Harlem River scenes, all zinc white, ash gray, and a low sun of muted apricot breaking through the overcast. A reading room or hallway with north light would suit it well.
