Harlem River at High Bridge

The High Bridge arches over a churn of gray-green water in Harlem River at High Bridge, an American Impressionist view by Ernest Lawson. Manhattan rises in haze behind it. Lawson builds the scene in thick, jeweled impasto, each stroke loaded with paint: ochre banks, slate currents, a masonry span rendered in dabs of violet and pale blue. Reflected light breaks the river surface into shifting flecks of white and celadon, while smoke softens the rooftops beyond the tower. Suited to a study or library wall, where its cool light and urban calm reward long looking.
