Harbor of Menton

Masts, mooring lines and low rooftops crowd the water at Menton, all held in the quiet hand of Albert Marquet. The harbor fills the frame from quay to open sea. Greys and soft blues do the work here, the mountains behind the port dissolved into haze while hulls and quays sit darker along the foreground. Marquet lets the sea take most of the surface, flat and pale, broken only by the slim verticals of masts and the reflected shimmer beneath them. The composition is calm, almost architectural, with light falling evenly across the whole scene. A composed choice for a study, hallway or reading corner that welcomes coastal and marine subjects.
