Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia rises at the center, lead-sheathed dome swelling over stacked semi-domes, cypress and poplar trees breaking the symmetry at ground level. Sevket Dag gives the great mosque room to breathe. Oil pigment sits in short, assured strokes: grey and dusty rose for the masonry, muted green for the gardens, minarets rising slender as pencils against a pale sky. Pigeons scatter across the courtyard, and small robed figures give the monumental architecture its human scale.
