Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia fills the canvas, its great dome riding above a Istanbul sky streaked with pink and slate grey. Sevket Dag paints the Byzantine monument from street level, pigeons scattering across the foreground cobbles. Ochre masonry and pale stone buttresses catch low winter light, while minarets rise slender at each corner. Small figures in fezzes and dark coats move below, dwarfed by the mass of the dome and its lead ribs. The brushwork stays loose and atmospheric, more Ottoman impressionism than architectural drawing. Suited to a hallway or library wall where it reads at a distance, then rewards a closer look.
