Dark cypress crowns climb across a band of open water in Gurzuf. The trees on the background of the sea. Pyotr Konchalovsky sets the viewpoint low, under the canopy, so the horizon rides high and bright. Paint sits thick in the foliage, loaded strokes of bottle green and near black stacked like masonry. Behind them the sea lies in flat horizontal pulls of cobalt, scored with white dabs where light breaks. Warm sky, no clouds, southern heat at full strength. A sunroom or stairwell with pale plaster suits it best, anywhere the deep greens and marine blue can hold their own against daylight.
