Gurzuf. The overall view

Terracotta rooftops tumble toward the sea in Gurzuf. The overall view gathers whitewashed walls, gardens and bright water into one sunlit sweep of the Crimean coast, a southern panorama by Pyotr Konchalovsky. Oil color goes on in loaded strokes, each roof a slab of burnt sienna, the water churned from cobalt into jade where it shallows. Behind the town rises the humped mass of Ayudag, its slopes scrubbed with dry ochre, while dark cypress spires stitch the shoreline together. Hung in a stairwell or sunroom, the scene carries summer heat indoors, a wide breath of shore light for a hallway or study.
