Gurzuf

A single cypress cuts the sky above Gurzuf on the Crimean coast, the Black Sea town Pyotr Konchalovsky painted at the height of summer, mountains dropping toward the water behind it. Oil paint goes on in loaded, slab-like strokes: ultramarine water flecked with white surf, sun-bleached walls in ochre and dusty rose, terracotta roofs climbing the slope. The long hump of Ayu-Dag closes the bay, and heat blurs the line where mountain meets water. It belongs in a bright stairway or a seaside guest room, where the deep blues hold their own against white plaster and noon light.
