Gulf in Villefranche-sur-Mer

The bay at Villefranche-sur-Mer stretches across the picture, its water rendered in bands of deep ultramarine and pale turquoise where the shallows begin. Stefan Popescu titled this work plainly, and the painting answers in kind: harbor walls, terracotta roofs, and hills stepping down to the sea. Light does most of the work here. Morning sun scatters across the surface in short, broken strokes, while the shadowed side of the gulf sinks into violet and slate. Boats sit at anchor as small dark marks, and the village above holds its warm ochre against all that cool water. Suited to a coastal hallway, a sunroom, or above a desk in a home office, where the horizon line can breathe.
