Green Slope on the Road. Martyshkino

A grassy hillside takes over the picture plane in Green Slope on the Road. Martyshkino, one of Konstantin Somov painted sketches of the Martyshkino coast near Kronstadt. The slope runs diagonal, road cut into it at the base. Grass rendered in layered strokes of sap green and olive, thin highlights of yellow ochre where sun catches the crest. The road itself stays pale, a ribbon of packed dirt edged with low weeds. Somov brushwork stays loose here, quicker than his park scenes, watercolor-thin passages over a visible drawing underneath. Sky occupies the upper corner in washed-out blue grey, barely holding back white paper. Suited to a hallway or stair landing, somewhere passed daily rather than stared at, where the slope reads anew each time.
