Green Noise

Birches surge toward the viewer in a wall of green. Green noise, painted by Arkady Rylov, catches young foliage at the exact moment wind takes hold of it. Look closely and the canopy resolves into broken strokes of emerald, sap green, and yellow ochre, laid over a sky that flickers pale blue between trunks. White birch bark, dappled with dark markings, cuts vertical rhythms through the leaf mass. The brushwork stays loose and spring-loaded, so the whole surface seems to rustle even at rest. A room with plain walls and morning light, a sunroom or reading nook, gives those greens room to breathe. Rylov painted from memory of a spring wind, and the memory holds: nothing in the composition sits still, yet nothing falls apart.
