Green Fjord

Sheer rock walls close over a channel of green water, and the whole picture breathes cold. Green fjord belongs to the Nordic series of Nicholas Roerich, the Russian painter who chased the north across his entire career. The pigment sits in broad, flat planes: viridian and slate green stacked against blue-grey stone, the water shaded darker where the cliffs narrow. No human figure appears. Roerich reduces the fjord to its essentials, ridgeline after ridgeline receding toward a pale sky, so the eye keeps travelling down the water without finding an end. His tempera technique gives the surface a matte, mineral quietness that oil never manages. Hang it where stillness matters: a study, a hallway, the wall above a reading chair.
