Great Wall of China

The Great Wall climbs a bare ridgeline and disappears over the crest, watchtower by watchtower, into cold mountain air. Nicholas Roerich painted it as a single serpentine line held against vast emptiness. The ramparts run in tempera blues and slate greys, their battlements reduced to jagged teeth of ochre light. Below, shadowed slopes fall away in hard geometric planes. Above, the sky presses down in flat, luminous bands, thinning toward a pale horizon where the wall meets the unknown. Suited to a study, library, or hallway where long horizons and open skies can carry the whole room.
