Great Wall of China

The Great Wall climbs and falls across a jade-green range, its watchtowers reduced by Nicholas Roerich to calm blocks of color under a vast, pale sky. Roerich paints the ancient fortification in flat, tempera-like planes: ochre ramps, blue shadowed slopes, a haze of rose light gathering at the horizon. Small cypress-like trees punctuate the foreground. Every ridge reads as contour and silence, the symbolism of his Central Asian journeys distilled into geometry.
