Gray Dunes

Dunes roll toward the horizon in a long, quiet sweep, their crests catching a thin coastal light. Robert Henri titled the scene plainly and painted it that way, letting the land do the talking. Sand ridges build in layered strokes of ash grey, pale putty, and cold blue shadow. Low scrub huddles in the hollows where wind has combed the slope smooth. The sky holds barely any color at all, just enough to press the dunes into relief. Henri worked the foreground thick and let distance thin out to a whisper of pigment. A study, a hallway, or a bedroom with linen and weathered wood would give this coastal silence room to breathe.
