Sea grass leans across the dune crest, dark blades scratching over pale sand, and the water beyond sits flat and bright. Grassy Dunes, Gloucester shows John French Sloan chasing a Cape Ann summer. Sloan works in loose oil strokes: sage and olive grasses laid in with quick flicks, sand built from cream, ochre and rose, a sky scumbled thin so the weave of the ground breathes through.
