Grand Quay at Fecamp

Fishing boats moor along the grand quay at Fecamp in this harbour view by Gustave Loiseau. Masts cross the sky above the stone embankment while the water carries reflections of hulls and rigging. Loiseau builds the scene with short, directional brushstrokes, grey and green laying over warm ochre along the quay wall. Figures move small against the warehouses, and the Channel light sits pale and cool over everything. His post impressionist touch keeps the surface lively where the masonry is plain. Hang it in a coastal hallway or a study that needs the salt air of a working Normandy port.
