Grand Canyon

Sheer walls of rust and violet stone drop a mile to the river below, the subject Benjamin Brown painted in Grand Canyon, an American impressionist reading of the great chasm. Broken brushwork builds the layered sandstone terrace by terrace, burnt sienna and salmon giving way to dusty lavender where shadow pools. A pale sky sits high and cold at the rim, and thin ridges of light trace every butte, gully, and fold of the high desert. Hung in a study or above a leather reading chair, it brings the warm geology of the Southwest indoors, holding its own against dark shelves and lamplight.
