Grainville Cliff near Fecamp

Chalk headland above the fishing port of Fecamp, painted by Gustave Loiseau at the moment the tide turns. Grainville Cliff rises pale against a running sky, its base darkened by wet rock and seaweed. Loiseau builds the face of the cliff in short, loaded strokes of cream and grey, broken here and there by violets where the chalk turns shadow. Below, the sea churns in slate green and white, small waves crossing in his unmistakable enfilade of brushwork. Gulls read as single flecks of paint. A study, coastal hallway, or reading room with linen and pale wood gives this seascape the cool northern light it asks for.
