Gracanica

Stone domes of a Serbian monastery press against a hot sky in Gracanica. Nadezda Petrovic paints the Byzantine church as a block of warm ochre masonry, its lead-grey roofs catching the light from one side. Heavy walls dominate the canvas. Round apses and stacked domes rise in firm, simplified masses, while cypresses and low greenery crowd the foreground in restless, dark strokes. The brushwork is thick and urgent, earth reds and sunbaked yellow pressed into shadow, a pale heavenscape running hard blue above the domes. Every plane feels built by hand, paint applied with the strength of someone standing before the church itself. Suited to a study or hallway where bold, sunlit form carries the wall on its own.
