Gracanica

Stone arches rise toward a domed silhouette. Gracanica, painted by Nadezda Petrovic, sets the Serbian medieval monastery against a swirling sky, its weathered masonry rendered in thick, expressive strokes. Ochre and terracotta wash across the facade, broken by deep umber shadow in the arched windows. Petrovic layers the pigment heavily, so the church walls seem to carry the same texture as the stone itself. Above, the sky churns in slate blue and pale rose, pressing down on the domes with almost physical weight. Dark cypress forms anchor the foreground, their verticals answering the curve of the Byzantine arches. Suited to a study or hallway, where the deep reds and earthen browns hold their own against plain walls.
