Gorky and Shalyapin in Nizhny Novgorod Sketch

Two towering figures of Russian letters share the foreground: Maxim Gorky and Feodor Shalyapin stand among the brick embankments and domed skylines of Nizhny Novgorod in this preparatory sketch by Konstantin Yuon. Loose, energetic strokes of graphite and gouache map the composition in quick passes. The Volga stretches pale behind them, factory smoke and church crosses penciled in at the horizon. Faces stay unfinished, yet the painterly warmth of the coats, the tilt of the heads, the suggestion of conversation already carry the whole scene. A natural companion for a reading room, library wall, or study shelf lined with Russian novels, where talk of art and hometowns never quite ends.
