Two towering figures of Russian letters share the foreground: Maxim Gorky and Feodor Shalyapin stand among the brick embankments and domed skylines of Nizhny Novgorod in this preparatory sketch by Konstantin Yuon. Loose, energetic strokes of graphite and gouache map the composition in quick passes. The Volga stretches pale behind them, factory smoke and church crosses penciled in at the horizon.
