Gompa

A Buddhist monastery clings to its ridge, white walls stacked tier upon tier above the valley floor. This is Gompa, one of Nicholas Roerich Himalayan scenes in tempera, rendered flat and luminous as an icon panel. Look closely and the geometry does the work: blocky whitewash set against slopes of cobalt and violet, prayer flags reduced to a fleck of pigment, a dark stone plinth anchoring the whole structure to the mountainside. Roerich layered thin, matte color so the peaks read like cut gemstone, cold light falling from behind the summit. A quiet study or hallway suits it well, somewhere the eye can climb.
