Golden Bird

Long before the eye finds wings, it finds speed. Golden Bird distills flight into a single tapering form, the whole body one blade of burnished gold aimed skyward. Brâncuși kept the swell of the chest and the taper of the neck into the beak, then stopped; no feathers, no eyes, no talons. Every surface of the bronze is rubbed until it throws back light like water, and the rough limestone blocks with a dark oak plinth beneath anchor all that gleam in raw stone. Place it where light travels: an entryway catches the shine by the door, a stairwell gives that upward line room to keep climbing.
