Going Rowing

Two rowers bend to their oars as a skiff slides through water the color of crushed violets and chartreuse. Going Rowing finds Pierre Bonnard at his happiest, afloat and painting light itself. Broken brushwork shivers across the surface, each stroke of oil paint catching a different temperature of sun. A scarlet jacket burns against olive reflections, oar blades slice white streaks into the current, and the far bank dissolves into warm ochre haze. Nothing sits still; everything shimmers. It earns its place on a stairway landing or in a sunroom, anywhere afternoon light already plays, where the river keeps moving all day.
