Gogol Comedy Sketch for the Inspector, Room in the House of the Mayor

A cluttered provincial parlor takes the stage: potted palms, upholstered chairs, a mirror crowded by onlookers waiting for the Inspector. Konstantin Yuon turns Gogol comedy into visible architecture in this sketch for the house of the mayor. Look closely and the theatrical craft shows itself. Washed gouache tones sit over quick pencil crosshatching, ochre wallpaper and dusty rose drapery built in fast, confident strokes. Figures crowd the doorway, chins lifted, half in costume, caught mid-scheme. Every fold of curtain and angle of furniture serves the farce. Suited to a reading nook, a hallway, or a library shelf lined with Russian classics.
