Bent iron plumbing trap set upright in a wooden mitre box: that blunt pairing is God, the Dada readymade assembled by Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven with Morton Shamberg. The U-bend of the pipe faces forward, galvanized skin pitted with rust and factory grime, the bolt flange still gripping its joint. Below, the mitre box shows saw kerfs and stamped maker marks, ordinary shop pine cut to precise right angles. A study or studio suits it best, hung near shelves of books on early twentieth century provocation, where its dry humor registers at a glance.
