Gloxinias and Fuschias

Velvet gloxinias and drooping fuschias crowd the foreground, their bells spilling over the edge of the picture. This floral study by John Duncan Fergusson of Gloxinias and Fuschias treats a potted still life as pure color. Deep carmine petals sit against cool green foliage, the gloxinia rosettes painted in thick, deliberate strokes that catch light like fabric. The Scottish Colourist instinct shows in the contrast: saturated reds and violets pressed close, background reduced to a loose wash so the flowers carry all the weight.
