Gloucester Harbor

Boats crowd the water at Gloucester Harbor, their masts a thicket of dark verticals against a bright Massachusetts sky. John French Sloan catches the working waterfront at full tide, hulls bobbing shoulder to shoulder while gulls wheel above the rooftops. Sloan paints with the loose, loaded brush of the Ashcan School: slate blue water chopped by white wake, ochre and rust on the fishing boats, a hazy grey-green sky pressing down at the horizon. Figures move along the docks in quick strokes, small against the mass of rigging and sail. Light sits thick on the water, broken into short horizontal dabs. Hang it where the sea mood belongs: a den, a stairway landing, or a reading nook that wants salt air and harbor noise.
