About this work

Glaciers of Himalayas

Glacier fields slide down the high Himalayas in long pale ribbons, ending where blue shadow begins. This is Glaciers of Himalayas by Nicholas Roerich, a vision of the roof of the world. Roerich paints the ice in layers of cobalt and cold white, ridged like beaten metal, while the peaks above hold snow so dense it reads as carved stone. Thin washes of violet settle into the valleys, and the sky burns a deep, even blue behind the summits. Every brushline follows the fall of the slope. A study or library wall suits its silence, somewhere the eye can rest on cold altitude for a long while.
