Giverny Willows

Willows lean over a slow bend of the Epte, their trunks dark against water the color of pewter and rose. Giverny Willows carries the calm of that riverbank, where Guy Rose found a subject that asked for nothing but light and patience. Look closely and the brushwork does the work: short olive and sage strokes build each crown, while violet shadow pools at the roots. The sky comes through in flakes of cream and pale blue between leaves, and the water surface breaks into long horizontal drags of lilac, pink, and gray green. A quiet corner rewards quiet pictures. This belongs above a writing desk, in a reading nook, or along a hallway that needs the softness of a French riverside morning.
