Girls with Ancient Musical Instruments

Two girls draped in thin white chitons tune a lyre between them, gold fillets binding their hair. Raphael Kirchner rendered the pair in the delicate line and pale tint that defined Art Nouveau illustration. One companion sounds a pair of double pipes, cheeks rounded, fingers spread over the tone holes. The other plucks strings that catch a wash of rose and celadon. Faint crosshatching in the shadows gives the drapery its weight, while an olive background keeps every eye on the instruments and the bare arms. Hang it where music already lives, a piano corner, a dressing corridor, or a reading nook softened with rose and olive textiles.
