Girl with a Dog in the Park at Grand Lemps

A young girl pauses on the grass at Grand Lemps, her small dog caught mid-turn at her feet. Bonnard calls her Dauphine and lets the park close around the pair in leafy violet shadow. The color does the talking here. Grass runs from acid green to deep bottle tones, the girl dress picks up a warm rose against the cool shade, and Bonnard breaks the foliage into flickering touches of paint rather than smoothing it over. Sunlight lands in patches, the way it actually falls through park trees, and the leash line between child and animal draws the eye straight into the center of the canvas. Hang it where the light shifts through the day, a hallway or a reading corner that needs a breath of garden air.
