Girl Running on a Balcony

A small girl races along a balcony railing, her stride breaking into a rhythm of repeated legs and swinging arms. Balla took one running child and multiplied her motion across the surface until running became the picture itself. Look closely and the figure dissolves into geometry: triangular wedges of pink, ochre, cobalt and white fan out behind her like the folds of a skirt caught mid flight. Every edge is a hard, deliberate line, the color flat and sunlit, closer to cut paper than to brushwork. The railing slants, the pattern stutters, and the whole image hums with the mechanics of a single step. A reading nook or stair landing wants this kind of forward energy, something that moves the eye along instead of settling it. Giacomo Balla built Girl Running on a Balcony from repetition, speed lines and flat planes of color, a futurist study of motion where the runner and her trail of color wedges become one continuous shape.
