Gerajte

A hayrack stands broad-shouldered across the field, its dark timber beams and steep shingled roof set against a sky of bruised grey and pale butter yellow. Gerajte is Ivan Grohar at his most Slovenian, the national hayrack rendered in heavy, loaded brushstrokes. Around its base the cut grass lies in thick ridges of olive, ochre and drying green, each stroke of the palette knife still visible in the sward. Behind it the land climbs into soft blue hills, painted so thinly the weave of the support shows through. A quiet corner of a study or hallway, where the morning light can pick out those dense greens.
