Gates of Dawn

A chapel facade rises over a gateway arch, tiny figures crossing beneath it in the slanting light of an old city morning. Gates of Dawn by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky turns the famous Vilno shrine into a scene of quiet devotion. The composition layers hatched stone, a peaked roofline, and the dark aperture of the passage below, where pedestrians shrink to silhouettes. Soft grey and umber washes fade toward a pale sky, the kind of sepia-toned ink work Dobuzhinsky used for his beloved old-town streets. Every window and buttress carries delicate linework. It suits a study or reading nook, anywhere a view of historic Vilnius can hang close at hand.
