Gates in the Tower

A stone gate rises at the base of a great tower, its arch cut deep and shadowed, the masonry around it drawn in warm grey and ochre blocks. Konstantin Bogaevsky gives the fortress a strange, dreamlike weight. Look closely and the surface carries everything: hatched shadows under the arch, sunlit plaster catching pale rose where the light strikes the wall, and a sky of muted blue pressing down behind the battlements. The gate stays closed and dark, a threshold the eye keeps returning to. Suited to a study or a hallway with low lamplight, where the heavy architecture reads slowly, arch by arch.
