Gardeners Cottage at Mme Balsans House

A stone cottage sits behind its garden wall in Gardener's Cottage at Mme Balsan's House, painted by Winston Churchill. Roof tiles catch the light, and the path leading to the door is worn pale by use. Churchill lays the pigment on thick and direct, with olive greens massing against a warm ochre facade and sky worked in loose blues. Shadows fall blue-violet across the wall, and every brushstroke keeps the tactile, unhurried character of a painter working outdoors in afternoon sun. It belongs in a study or reading room, where its quiet rural warmth rewards a long look.
