Garden with woodland

A sunlit garden opens toward a band of dark woodland, and Cuno Amiet lets the two greens argue. Grass in the foreground carries thick impasto, each blade built from loaded strokes of sap green and yellow ochre. Beyond the flowerbeds the tree line rises, painted in cooler, bluer greens that push the garden forward. Dappled light breaks across the canopy where shorter strokes of lemon and white interrupt the shadow. The brushwork stays loose and deliberate, color applied wet against wet so the edges of shrubs and trunks soften into one another. Amiet painted gardens his whole life, and this one shows why. It suits a sunroom or a reading corner that needs the feeling of looking out rather than in.
