Garden

Flowers crowd the foreground, painted with the loose confidence of the Young Poland school. Józef Mehoffer named this canvas Garden, and the title says only half of it: the rest is color pressed thick against color. Reds and pinks surge upward while foliage breaks into greens ranging from deep viridian to a pale, almost lime flicker. Brushwork stays visible everywhere, short and decisive, so petals and leaves never quite settle into fixed form. Light sits on the surface rather than inside it, the way midday sun flattens shadow in a walled courtyard. A sunroom or a bright stairwell would carry it well, anywhere with enough daylight to answer the saturated beds of pigment.
