Flower beds press close against the walls in Garden by the House, Gustave Loiseau building every blossom from short, trembling touches of thickly loaded paint. Lilac phlox and pale roses lean across a gravel path. Behind them the facade glows cream and grey, shutters half open. Foliage is worked in en tremblant hatching, moss green crossed with violet shadow, so the leafy surface shivers with afternoon light.
