Ganges (Cold ravine)

Water hurries through a narrow gorge, pale against rock gone dark with shadow. Nicholas Roerich titled the scene Ganges (Cold ravine), and the current sets the entire composition in motion. Tempera gives the stone a chalky mineral grain, indigo sinking into violet where the gorge walls turn from the sun. Patches of snow cling to high ledges. Above, the peaks flatten into deep cobalt, that unmistakable Himalayan blue, while meltwater below runs milky jade green. A dim study suits it well, or an entryway where the river looks almost luminous. Give it morning light and the whole surface warms by a degree.
