Funeral Symphony (III)

Bells hang from an unseen belfry across a darkening field of grey and violet, tolling downward in layers. Funeral Symphony (III) by Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis reads as painted music, each band of tone a phrase of mourning. Look closely and the brushwork tightens into rhythm: narrow verticals like organ pipes, a pale disc lowering behind cloud, silhouetted towers dissolving into haze. The palette holds to ash grey, deep ultramarine, and bruised lilac, the whole surface breathing with slow, deliberate weight. A study, a dim hallway, a reading nook with low lamplight. Anywhere the evening grows long, this symbolist meditation finds its place.
