Fuji from Lake Yamanaka

Mount Fuji rises above Lake Yamanaka in this celebrated woodblock composition by Shotei Takahashi. The sacred cone fills the upper sheet, snowcap drawn in unprinted paper against deep Prussian blue shadow. Boats sit low on the still water, their dark hulls reflected in faint horizontal strokes. Mist softens the foothills where pine groves begin. Takahashi carves the summit ridge with a single sure contour, letting flat planes of graded blue carry the distance, a shin hanga approach to landscape that keeps every element quiet and exact.
