Fuji from Kurasawa

Mount Fuji rises above a ravine, snow-capped against a pale sky, in Fuji from Kurasawa by Shotei Takahashi. The peak dominates the upper sheet, its summit sharp and clean. Below, Kurasawa drops away in steep wooded slopes. Pine clusters cling to the ridgelines. A stream cuts through the valley floor, rendered in fine carved lines that read as moving water. Takahashi works the foreground in dense crosshatching and deep indigo, letting the mountain stay almost bare, washed in soft greys and a single band of white snow. The contrast pulls the eye upward, from dark gorge to quiet summit. It suits a reading nook or a hallway where one long, calm glance lands on it daily.
