Fugue

Flags and banners crowd the surface of Fugue, one of Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis most musical compositions, where red pennants rise in overlapping rows like voices entering a score. The palette is ember red, charcoal, and muted gold, arranged in rhythmic bands that echo one another across the field. Triangular forms repeat and overlap in tight counterpoint, each layer slightly offset from the last. Lines sharpen toward the upper edge, thinning into dark sky, while the lower register thickens into dense clumps of cloth and shadow. Every band seems to answer the one beneath it. Suited to a music room, hallway, or study where layered, rhythmic imagery rewards a long look.
