Fruit on the Red Carpet

Ripe apples and pears settle onto deep crimson wool in Fruit on the red carpet, a still life where Pierre Bonnard lets paint do the talking. Scarlet and vermilion dominate the weave, its pattern dissolving into loose strokes of orange and rose. The skins hold green and gold against all that heat, bruised violet at the shadowed edge, each form pressed close in a composition with no horizon, only surface. A dining room or kitchen nook suits it well, pale wood and bare plaster giving that color space to carry.
